Dowsing

Traditionally, dowsing has been used to find water, many outdoor survival workshops teach the use of sticks (or one forked stick) to locate underground flow, which ultimately leads to water. This technique has been used for around 8000 years – having been represented in ancient tablets and cave artwork. However, dowsing is also commonly used by beekeepers to detect areas of vibrational stress, so that beehives can be kept in a calmer zone for a greater honey harvest. Geologists also use dowsing in preparatory searches for mineral deposits, and it can also be used to detect unknown water springs. Dowsing can be used to find anything you desire, including objects and information, both environmental and personal.

Dowsing can be explained in the light of quantum physics – everything has an energy field, which includes you, your hair, your home, tools, instruments, books, and even pens. The human energy field radiates from around 18-25ft, the planet Earth has a much greater energy field, relative to size, and the energy field is smaller in regard to smaller objects. In dowsing, the human energy field is used to detect and tap into other energy fields, which leads to the desired object, person, or point of stress.

It is said that to be a good dowser requires the balancing of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Most individuals are dominant on one side – left being logical, critical, pragmatic and linear, and the right being creative, abstract, sociable and agreeable. Balancing the hemispheres can be exercised by practicing meditation, yoga, tai chi or qi gong – carrying clear quartz, or hematite, crystals and jewellery can also help in bringing both sides together. In completing this step, greater results can be reaped when using your dowsing apparatus.

Dowsing tools come in a variety of forms. Pendulums are an effective type and also offer great aesthetic appearance – when not in use they can be hung on display, and can be made from crystals and metals. Clear quartz and amethyst pendulums provide additional charge to your dowsing, as both stones are associated with intuition, clarity and psychic ability. Rose quartz and aventurine pendulums may be of greater relevance to matters of the heart, emotions and other significant individuals. Brass dowsing rods are another popular type and are most commonly used to discover energy flow, such as in Feng Shui within the home, garden and office. Dowsing can also be practiced with a forked tree branch, which provides a much less costly alternative. However, the choice of tool is personal, and it is advisable to find the one that suits and works best.

Dowsing can be used in divination, Feng Shui, magick, and everyday life. It has a basis of science, with a veil of mysticism, and is thoroughly enjoyable to practice.
