Magick and Witchcraft:

Symbols and Meanings

The practise of witchcraft is associated with many symbols, which have strong representations due to the symbolic nature. These symbols can be traced in the air whilst envisioning blue light, or drawn, carved, anywhere or onto any object to aid spell and magickal work.

The Pentagram

The most prominent of magickal symbols is the pentagram. The pentagram is a five pointed star, representing the natural elements of earth, water, fire, wind and spirit. Across beliefs, the pentagram holds different meaning, however the elemental points is a constant. The pentagram is a central feature of many rituals, such as the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram, and it is a symbol of protection, balance, security and harmony – is representative of the spirit in harmony with the universe. Wearing a pentagram helps to ward off negative influence.

The Cross

Another common symbol is the Cross (of magickal variations) symbolises life and fertility, is associated with the live giving force of the sun. The horizontal bar on the cross stands for our physical existence, our body, and life, and the vertical bar is representative of the virtual world, of wisdom, knowledge and higher power. It is very emblematic that Christ was crucified on the cross – the crossing of the horizontal and vertical bars represents overcoming physicality and arriving in the higher plane of infinite wisdom and eternal understanding.

The Triple Goddess

The magickal Triple Moon Goddess symbol illustrates the Wiccan and Neopagan belief of the ‘Great Goddess', which is called upon for aspects of feminine energy and is demonstrative of the lunar cycle. The ‘Great Goddess' is threefold as the singular Maiden, Mother and Crone, and also at times, three sisters. This image is symbolic of different stages of the female lifespan and the waxing, waning, and full phases of the moon, and is associated with intuition and psychic abilities, creativity, mystery, and wisdom. In relation to the phases of the moon, the triple goddess is a maiden during the waxing phase, a mother during the full, and in waning, a crone. The maiden reflects innocence and youth, the mother, fertility, protection, and love, and the crone, age and wisdom, and the transition to death. This symbol would be helpful for any magick work that calls on aspects of female energy, such as intuition and creativity, utilises the lunar cycle, or focuses on any female-specific issues.
