Meditation is a practise which has existed for thousands of years – and has been treated as a very sacred and spiritual practise, and is still a central focus of many religions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and Jainism. In present times, meditation practised throughout the world, and techniques are also adopted by individuals who consider themselves agnostic, and even atheist. Studies have illustrated the benefits of meditation to mental health and well-being – and although meditation is still a religious practise for many, it is a rapidly growing interest for health. To meditate is to attend to and establish a deep connection with the self and the external world, and to find a sense of complete or wholeness. It helps to encourage feelings of enlightenment and harmony, and a connectedness with a higher frequency. It is important to meditate comfortably, use a yoga mat, or if this is not available, ensure that you use props such as cushions as a support.
