It would appear that science and spirituality have no relationship, with regard to opposing views of Darwinism and the Big Bang, and Creation. However, with regard to the science of mind, religion and spirituality are growing areas of interest, as they are large parts of human experience and culture.

The importance of such belief is often viewed in situations of death and dying, including bereavement and terminal illness, where existentialist questions are faced, and spiritual development helps coping with physical difficulties. The thought of afterlife, and seeing loved ones again, and strengthening a sense of purpose and meaning greater than the physical planet, are strong supporting factors in sustaining quality of life, and positive outlook.

In regards to psychotherapy, difficulty is faced with the manner of approach, psychologists recognise that spirituality is important, but often clients fear discussing thoughts and concerns in fear of being ridiculed or believed to be deluded, and therapists cannot usually raise or direct questions towards matters that have not been raised. In my experience, counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists respond well to spiritual matters, and those using the person-centred approach respond the best. For those who may be in contact with these types of services, there is no need to fear disclosing spiritual belief, thought, concern or even discord – if anything, you will be helping to create a greater understanding of human spirituality, and will help to grow therapeutic aims and approaches.
